For the past couple of years, there has been a drastic shift in the plots and presentation of Hindi movies with the frivolous, popular genre being substituted by meaningful, closer to life movies that portray contemporary stories. This can be easily seen in the currently playing and upcoming Bollywood movies.

It is difficult to separate the popular movies from the so called artistic movies. The current Bollywood movies being released depict real issues and are well directed, edited and cinematographed. The movies being made by the present day directors are influencing the tastes of the public and presenting them with more thoughtful cinema.

The story lines of a lot of the latest and upcoming Bollywood movies including 3 Idiots, Wake Up Sid and Well Done Abba are related to the problems and life problems of an ordinary man. The common citizen's fight against worldwide terrorism and social injustice has become a favourite theme amongst the modern directors.

Use of world class and mesmerizing special effects and technology is evident in many movies including Krrish, Love Story-2050 and Drona. Animation films are also becoming very well known, and even large production houses like Yash Raj Films are trying their hand at this genre.

Yet another change that has set the cash registers ringing for producers is the remake of past classics.. Some of the new remakes to reach the audience are RGV ki Aag a remake of Sholay and Don remake of Amitabh's blockbuster of the 70s.

The encouragement to make films that cater to the metropolitan movie goers is increasing now. Many movies made in recent times like Company, Fashion, Page3 and 3 Idiots, which were directed to the movie goers in the cities have turned out to be commercially successful also.

Another trend in the Hindi Film Industry is production of a lot of movies annually by a few production houses. In fact there is an emerging trend towards co-productions as well.

One important development that must be noted here is the rise in the export of the prints of the big Bollywood releases and good response to Hindi films outside India. The majority of NRIs are spread all over the globe and they prefer to watch Hindi movies, and you can even think that soon Bollywood will give stiff competition to even the Hollywood cinema.
