Most artists use a photo to make a dog portrait because it is extremely hard to get the animal to hold a pose for the required duration. The first step of making a dog portrait using oil is to sketch the subject. Sketching is helpful because it guides an artist.

Blending the colors and picking them is one of the most complicated processes when painting. Oil based portraits look more appealing when they are framed like traditional pet oil paintings. Features like the paintings solidity and easy maintenance also make it possible not to put it under glass. Framing under glass is still also popular and it is up to the client to choose the best option. The artist may even just roll up the painting and deliver it to the client in case of other framing preferences that will be arranged by the client.
